Kerkennah Island
The Kerkennah Islands, located twenty kilometers off the coast of the Tunisian city of Sfax, are the only place on Earth where ordinary people can own portions of the sea. It consists of five islands with a rich cultural history. Occupied since Pheonician times, the islands have a rich Roman and more recent historical history. It has a permanent population of 16,000 who survive on subsistence agriculture and octopus fishing using traditional trapping methods unique to the islands. The low lying islands are also an important wintering area for migratory birds.
