The Kerlen River Basin contains a unique blend of natural and cultural heritage, preserving some of the world's most endangered ecosystems and biological diversity. The valley contains a rich heritage of deep cultural, artistic, and scientific value. This mighty river has a total length of 1,264 km, with 1,090 km running through Mongolia's territory. The headwaters of the Kherlen River are located within the World Heritage-Burhan Khaldun mountain and the surrounding protected area. It is a place of great historical significance, deeply connected to Mongolian history and the events of Emperor Genghis Khan. The ethnic groups of Khalkh, Buriad, Barga, Uzemchin, Uriankhai, and Hamnigan have all played a significant role in the establishment and development of the country, creating a distinct nomadic culture, knowledge and traditions that have been passed down through generations.
