Vichy, known as the ‘Queen of Spa Towns,’ is one of the most prestigious French spa resorts. Its exceptional heritage includes pioneering spa medicine, a sophisticated spa quarter with interconnected pump rooms, and Second Empire architecture commissioned by Napoleon III. Vichy is famous for its therapeutic spring waters, historic bottling tradition, and mineral-rich landscape, which continue to be celebrated today. The town also integrates spa functions with urban river landscapes, offering a model for park city planning. However, climate change poses significant risks. Flooding is a recurring problem, with major floods recorded throughout history, including in 2003. These floods threaten Vichy’s historic spa quarter, pump rooms, and grand bath complex. Rising humidity and storm damage also jeopardize the integrity of Vichy’s historic buildings, including Second Empire and Belle Époque structures. Additionally, landscape degradation, including tree loss and changes to the riverside environment, further strains the town's cultural and natural heritage. By participating in the Preserving Legacies program, Vichy will receive technical support for flood resilience, maintaining spring water quality, and adapting heritage sites. The program will also promote community engagement, preserve traditional knowledge, and develop climate adaptation strategies to ensure the sustainability of Vichy’s invaluable heritage.
