Shenkeng District is widely regarded as Taipei’s garden. Famous for its food, and its tofu in particular, the district remains a vibrant living community. With plentiful mountainous terrain and streams, Shenken has been the cornerstone of the Taiwanese economy from the 19th and 20 centuries, producing tea, colorful dyes and camphor. Shenkeng’s harbor was also an important trading hub. A busy business district evolved around these activities which is now at risk from climate change. Water levels have dropped significantly resulting in less trade while population attrition coupled with an aging population has had a significant impact on Shenkeng.
